Connectors for National Grid
Design & Construction
Our connectors are designed to give the highest possible performance at EHV

Type Registration
National Grid require connectors to comply with the requirements of their specifications TS 1, TS 3.1.5, TS 3.1.4 and TGN(E)185. We have carried out the following tests on our comprehensive range of connectors to demonstrate our compliance:

Mechanical Tests – In all load axes. Verify mechanical performance of connectors under forces due to dead load, ice, wind and short circuit. Our published maximum load figures are these results after the relevant safety factor is applied.

Heat Rise Tests – Verify rated continuous current of connector

Short Circuit Tests – Verify connector will not be permanently damaged by the huge energy dissipated by short circuit. At 400kV, the required level is 63kA/1s. This equates to nearly 4 billion Joules (1million kCalories) in one second – the same amount of energy that the average person would expend in 200 days!

RIV/Corona Tests – Verify that connectors will not produce radio interference above acceptable limit at rated voltage
In addition to the relevant National Grid standards we also refer to BS EN 60694 for test procedures. This is the specification used for switchgear testing e.g. we are using the same specification and test procedures as adopted by the manufacturers of the equipment you are mounting our connectors to.
We have type registration packages, inclusive of ‘family’ drawings, ready for our 132kV, 275kv and 400kV ranges of connectors. The packages are prepared in line with TGN 185.

Selection
Our online connector selector enables you to select the connector you require for your particular application, check if it is identified on a National Grid family drawing and then to download the test reports cited in support of that connector.
Most connectors also have a downloadable AutoCAD drawing to simplify the design process and interface to other equipment.
